In the book, the author actually wrote Satan to represent the ideas of Man, such was having knowledge, technology, pride, arrogance, and such.
So basically, if you think Satan is evil, then what does that make Man?

obviously i didnt read the book, so in my mind i have gathered all the knowlegde i have of this "satan" guy and came up with a agreement that generally speaking he is an evil character. so of course ima say he's evil.

In my personal opinion, if there is a Satan he's not going around personally tempting people to do bad things. Saying "The Devil made me do it" is just an excuse and shows unwillingness to recognize your own personal weakness and vices.
I believe that if humans truly have free will like some religions say God gave us, they have the power to make the choice to be good or evil. It's not some supernatural being or a little devil on your shoulder telling you to do something; the choice to be good or evil, right or wrong is completely in your hands.
Also, bringing Paradise Lost into it again, Lucifer decided to live his life purposely opposing and doing everything the opposite way that God did. So basically, without God, there wouldn't be any Lucifer, therefore without good there wouldn't be any definition for evil and vice versa. One can't exist without the other, because if you didn't know what evil was you wouldn't know what good is.
And Illusion, i'm not the devil, I'm just educated =P Though there are some religious fanatics that would call that a sign of the devil...
