Convention Hotel Location & Information

Henry G. Gonzalez Convention Center

San Japan: Sinister 6 (2013) will be located at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center & San Antonio Grand Hyatt Hotel in downtown San Antonio, Texas. It will be happening on August 16th-18th, 2013. The Convention Center is directly next door to the Grand Hyatt. The hotel is nearby the Rivercenter Mall. Inside the Rivercenter Mall is a large food court with a large variety of low-cost eateries (less than 5 minute walk from the convention). Everything is at the heart of famous River Walk with the famous Alamo a short walk from the hotel.

Hotel Address:

600 E. Market Place
San Antonio, Texas 78205 USA

Phone: 1-210-224-1234

[Google Maps] – [Mapquest]

It is located right off of Hwy 281 near the Alamodome. This is about a mile from the IH35 & Hwy 281 Intersection.

The entire convention will be located in two locations: the 2nd-4th floor of the Grand Hyatt along with the “A Section” and parts of the “B Section” within the HBG Convention Center. We will have over 300,000 sq feet of function space to use in 2013. This is over fives times the space compared to our 2011 event. For photos of the Convention Center, click here.

San Japan has negotiated a fantastic convention hotel room rate starting at $119/night
(normal daily rate is $199/night). This is the lowest hotel rate that you’ll find in the immediate vicinity. We also negotiated with the hotel a daily parking rate of $12/day self-parking. The special parking rate only applies if you’re staying at the San Antonio Grand Hyatt and the room that you’re staying in is under your own name otherwise the normal rate for parking is $23/day ($33/day Valet). You will be able to reserve a room between August 14th to August 21th at the convention rate if you want to arrive early or stay a couple days afterward. The parking discount will be applied directly to your hotel bill when you inform front desk that you’re parked at the hotel. You will have In/Out privileges.

Hotel Check-In Time is at 3PM.
Hotel Check-Out Time is at 12PM.

You can also call in (phone number is above) to reserve your room. Be sure to ask for the “San Japan 2013 Anime Convention” to get the special $119/rate.

The Hyatt reservation room cutoff is July 25th, 2013. However, we have sold out our room block the past two years and we anticipate to sell out our hotel once again. Do not hesitate on reserving your room! Be sure to read the FAQ below which answers the most frequently asked questions that we’ve received.

QuestionAnswer
QuestionAnswer
Will my credit/debit card be charged when I reserve a room?Your credit card will not be charged when you reserve your hotel room. It will only be charged when you arrive at the convention hotel OR if you don't show up for your reservation (so be sure to cancel if necessary). You may see a pending charge on your credit card but this is done by the hotel to ensure that it is a valid credit card. This is standard practice with all hotel reservations. You must cancel 24 hour prior to your arrival otherwise your credit card will be charged.
I need to reserve more than one room, what do I do?You setup a second reservation on-line or call the hotel directly (phone number is above), ask for Reservations and they will set it up for you.
How much is parking around the area?

Parking is $7-$15 for open area parking in the immediate area and $9-$25/day for garage parking (24 hour parking). For more information on parking in the area, click here & here [pdf file].
Are there any activities around the immediate area? The hotel is right at the heart of the Riverwalk which you can take a tour. There is a River Taxi service a short distance from the hotel located on the Riverwalk by the mall which costs $5 each way or $10-$15 for a 24 hour pass. The Alamo, HemisFair Park with the Tower of Americas, and Ripley's Believe Or Not are all located within a mile radius of the hotel.
After 9pm, the mall will be closed. What food options will be available? There is a 24 hour cafe and coffee shop within the host hotel. There is Denny's less than 2 blocks from the hotel and a Whataburger that is 4 blocks away. Here is a list of places in the area that are open late night and 24 hours that are less than .5 miles from the convention.
What should I do to get the lowest hotel rate?

Click on "1" on number of guests when reserving your hotel room. If you click on any number higher then the Grand Hyatt will be charging you an extra $10 per guest/per night ($129/2 people, $139/3 people, $149/4 people). We will not be inquiring on how many guests actually stay in your hotel room nor is it our business. Our only business is to ensure you have a great time at San Japan.

Note: If there is any issue with the hotel room, like a key card being needing to be reactivated, the person/people that listed on the room will be the only person which can make necessary changes at front desk or ask for a new room key.
How much is the total cost per room night with tax?
San Antonio Sales & Hotel Tax is 16.75% added to the final bill. It comes to around ~$140 a night if the hotel room is under one person (+$10 per person/per night). So if you're staying for two nights, it'll cost around $280; three nights, around $416; and four nights around $555 to help you with the math if you're planning to share a room amongst several friends. This is still the cheapest room rate in the area as hotels in the immediate vicinity are $160+ a night before taxes (and that's just at the La Quinta that is 2 blocks away).
Am I required to reserve and/or stay at the Hotel in order to attend San Japan?
No, you are not required to reserve or stay at the Hotel. However, it is quite beneficial for San Japan if you decide to reserve a room as we are required to fill a certain amount of hotel rooms in order to have access to the hotel meeting space. To ensure that San Japan is able to hold future conventions at the hotel & convention center, we highly recommend in considering to reserve a room at the hotel. You're also much closer to the action instead of walking 4-6 blocks in the hot Texas heat to another nearby hotel.
What stores are at the Rivercenter Mall? What is there to eat there?Go to the official website for a list of eateries and stores. Some places to check out is the Sanrio Store (Hello Kitty), IMAX Theater and a bunch of places to eat at the Food Court and the surrounding area.

Here are some additional answers to some other frequently asked questions that we’ve received about the hotel.

I cannot believe you’re not still at the Rivercenter Marriot.  Being right ON the Riverwalk was huge for me because I’m in a wheelchair, so having to walk… anywhere… is a problem, even in a relatively urban place like downtown San Antonio (and no, I don’t live in SA, or anywhere closeby).  Even saying that the Riverwalk is “nearby” isn’t good enough for someone like me who has to deal with what I have to deal with.  I don’t care what the contracts were, or who may have been trying to gouge whom… someone dropped the ball.  Get back there somehow next time.  Work it out.  Fundamentally change the time of year San Japan is held if you have to.

  • Mark Hancock

I take back entirely my previous comment. I wanted to erase it, but it will not allow me to. I am just not familiar with what and where everything is in San Antonio.

  • Mark Hancock

Okay, I’m not crying wolf on this one: I just reserved my room, and found out that the rate of $109/night applies ONLY to single occupancy. It’s $119/night for two people, and $139/night for three or four people. Why wasn’t this mentioned?

  • Mark Hancock

Aw, crap, it WAS mentioned. This page is way too long.  Sorry about that

    • Anonymous

We try to list as much information as we can. It might be an overload but better to list it all than none at all.

  • JonsMind

For reservation, what if I need to reserve two rooms?.. It only shows the option for one.

    • San Japan

You will have to do two separate reservations or call the hotel to setup for two rooms.

      • JonsMind

If I call the hotel, would I just let them know I want those to rooms to be together?.. And I’d still be getting the special pricing?

        • San Japan

The hotel will be able to answer that question. Yes, you can get the special rate, just tell them you’re booking under the San Japan 2012 group.

  • Lightningcaelumxiii

do we just need any card to reserve? what if it has no funds right now, but a week before the even there is money? would that be accepted?

    • San Japan

Hotel reservation for the special SJ rate ends on July 20th. You have to reserve before then otherwise you’ll pay the normal $150-$200/night at the Hyatt. You can make an attempt to reserve but the hotel may do a check to quick check to see if the funds are available. You must use a card to reserve, this is standard for all hotel reservations.

  • devin /iggy

do we need to put san japan llc when we get to the address and phone number page? or can we just tell them at the front desk we are with the con?

    • San Japan

You put your actual address on where you live and your contact phone number. This is your billing address for your credit card when reseving the room. Do not put San Japan LLC as your reservation will be canceled.

      • devin /iggy

ok thank you very much. i did not put san japan it was an afterthought of how they would know i was going to the con

        • San Japan

The hotel will already know when you check-in that you’re part of the convention. The reservation link is specifically for San Japan and when you check in they’ll have on file that the room was reserved under the San Japan room block so you will get the discounted room rate.

  • Guest

It says under the Q&A section that to get the cheapest hotel rate reserve the room with only 1 guest listed even if more are staying in the room, but you do not mention the Marriott only the Hyatt. Since I am reserving a room at the Marriott should I say how many guests are going to be staying in the room and pay the additional cost? I do not want to risk getting in trouble.

    • SanJapanAdmin

We gave the same advice on registering for 1 guest to get the lowest rate the two years we were at the Marriott before moving to the Hyatt this year. No attendees told us they ever had an issue or getting in trouble with the Marriott.

  • Veronicabergeris

Do you have to pay to enter the con. or is that part free and just what you buy and where you go charged?

    • San Japan

Most of the convention requires a badge which you must pay for to enter. The only part that doesn’t require a badge is the hotel lobby and some video rooms. There will be badge checkers throughout the convention.

      • Veronicabergeris

Thank you do you know the exact price or where to find it, so I know how much money to bring?

        • San Japan

Depends if you want to be there for one or 3 days. It is listed on our registration page: http://www.san-japan.org/reg/info

          • Veronicabergeris

Thank you. It says “One FREE Child Pass (Age 6-12) for each Regular At-Door 1-Day Or 3-Day Pass Price (No FREE Child Pass For Pre-Registrations) – Child must be PRESENT for visual verification.” but will there be enough bagedes/tikets if i come on the day of the con. or would it be sold out? And what time does it start/open?

          • San Japan

Times are listed on the website: http://www.san-japan.org/sjinfo/times-layout

And the answer to your questions are all in the registration FAQ: http://www.san-japan.org/reg/reg-faq

  • http://twitter.com/kitaraastrid Kitaraastrid

According to the info here, La Quinta is being considered a convention overflow hotel, and it says here that debit/credit cards will not be charged when reserving rooms, however, when I called just to double check, they said it will be put on the debit/credit account as a pending charge. Not trying to ask a stupid question here, but usually when reserving a room the hotel just puts the card on file (not charging it at all), and we are not actually charged til checking in where we can change our payment method if need be. Am I misunderstanding the meaning of “pending charge” and it means the same as putting the card on file or am I getting this right?

Also, can it please be added that the hotel reservation site adds additional charges depending on how many people are in the room and that it is not a flat $119 a night as posted? Suggestion since I got rather confused when I went to the site and the price went up. ^-^

    • Kitaraastrid

       I also noticed after re-reading that it says La Quinta STARTS at $119. My bad. ^-^;

    • Kitaraastrid

      Question about the pending charges still applies! ^-^;

    • San Japan

It means it is pending _until_ you check-in as it is having a card on file if you change your payment method. If you do _not_ check-in that day then it will charge your card for the first night. This is quite standard with all hotels which is why you need to cancel by a certain time, sometimes up to 6pm that day _or_ 24 hours prior to not be charged.

      • Kitaraastrid

Oh, so it’s just another way of saying the card is being kept on file?

        • San Japan

Yes, and charged for one night if you do not show up. The pending charge is just a quick check to see if the credit card is valid.

          • Kitaraastrid

So it shouldn’t show up on my bank account at all after I reserve it?

          • San Japan

It shouldn’t _but_ we aren’t LaQuinta either. They set the policies about credit card charges.

          • Kitaraastrid

            Alright, thank you so much!

  • Spinnakergirl

what is the code for reserving a room at the Hyatt?  I don’t see it and SJL isn’t working

    • San Japan

See notice on top about all hotels in our room block is sold out.

  • Guest

2 things, first I reserved my hotel room at the marriot riverwalk in june using the link provided, but when I went to the offical marriot site and used my confermation number to check and make sure I had it right the marriot site says my confermation number isnt valid, Is this normal do I still check in like normal at the marriort? and if so what time is check in at this hotel?

    • San Japan

Call Marriott Riverwalk to confirm your confirmation and they will also tell you check-in time. (210) 224-4555

  • Cassie

So I’m supposed to click “1″ for the number of guests staying in the room, even if I have 4 people? I thought it was like, against hotel rules or something to have more people in the room than I’d said would be when I reserved it…

    • SanJapan

You’re not suppose to but if you rather pay $149/night+tax to ensure that everyone is on the room list then you can. It is merely a suggestion.

  • Victoria

I’m kinda worried. My boyfriend and I booked a room and it said it would email us a confirmation that we’ve booked it at the ending page after all the booking and card info. Well it’s been like a week and we still haven’t gotten anything. I’ve also re-messaged them to send me a confirmation and I still received nothing so I’m a bit concerned. Does the confirmation of room not send until later on closer to the con, or is it something else? I’m just a bit worried and don’t want to re-book to find out later that it was already there somewhere. I just don’t know what to do about this x___X

    • SanJapan

You will need to call the San Antonio Grand Hyatt to confirm and let them know that you’re not getting your e-mail confirmation. You can call them at (210) 224-1234. Ask for Reservations.

      • Victoria

Thank you. I called, and they still haven’t sent me an email confirmation, but when I called they say they have the room reserved so I guess it’s fine. Gonna try to call again later if I still don’t receive an email just so I’ll have the number. Just to be on the safer side lol ^___^U

  • Kara

What would be the cheapest method of transportation from the convention center to the World Mark Condo in New Braunfels, TX?

    • SanJapan

Likely by car. You will need to research on your own if any public transportation goes from NB to downtown S.A. as we do not have this information.

  • Ay

When you guys have the Overflow set up, do you think you’ll be able to negotiate cheaper parking than the normal parking rate, like you’ve done with the Hyatt?
We have a room booked with Hyatt, but we might cancel that one and move to the overflow so as to avoid insanely crowded elevators [and also the fact that Hyatt never sent us our confirmation email and we're worried about them selling our hotel room and claiming we never had one, which happened at Anime Matsuri a few years ago], but we’d rather not pay 100+$ for parking like we did last year.

    • SanJapan

The overflow is pretty much set but we were unable to negotiate a cheaper parking rate with the overflow hotel. If you haven’t received your confirmation just give them a call at 210-224-1234, ask for Reservations.

If you want a cheaper rate, you can park at the Marina parking garage directly across from the Grand Hyatt at $10 up to 8am each day. You should be able to get in if you park on Thursday. It will be full on Friday and Saturday.

I was unfortunate enough to have to settle on a hotel a good distance away. So I wanted to know if the San Antonio busses come close to the convention center/hotel?

    • SanJapan

We’re located in the heart of downtown San Antonio. Buses and streetcars come by here all the time. You can look up the info on the VIA Transit website. http://www.viainfo.net
