Anime Music Videos (AMVʼs) are made from clips of anime shows and/or anime movies, set to a specific music style that are made by fans of Anime and Pop Culture.

AMV Categories,  Descriptions,  &  Time limit.

Fast Action

AMVʼs containing moderate to fast music mixed with moving action anime scenes, this category can also contain some Anime Trailer parodies if the intent is action based and not comedic. (4-5 Minutes Max*)

Epic Drama

AMVʼs that are intended for an emotional response from the audience, it can be either joyful to sorrow. Romantic, depressing, or joyful songs are a must. (4-5 Minutes Max*)

Comedy/p00p

AMVʼs with the intent of comedy or jokes; you may use generic songs, comedy songs, and/or audio clips from Movies & TV. This category may contain some Anime trailer parodies only if intent is comedic. You may use your own animations for this category, you may also use an ʻAMV Hellʼ style of video, but as long as its within the given time limit. (5-6 Minutes Max*)

Max Time limits given, INCLUDES your bumper/intro/ending credits. If we feel if your AMV submission doesn't fit into the category youʼve recommended, we will contact you about the possibility of a category change of the AMV.  However, if you do not reply back in the specific amount of time given. We will change your AMV to its fitted category.

There will be 3 (Three) awards given out this year for each category.

Editors Choice: Editors Choice will be decided by selected Con Staff and/or Anime Fun TV Staff in a private screening of all submitted AMVʼs.

The Peopleʼs Choice: The Peopleʼs Choice will be decided on a public screening and voting of selected AMVʼs by the Editors.

Best AMV Overall: Out of the Editors & The Peoples Choice awards given, the editors will choose out of all three categories which AMV is the Best Overall. THE WINNING OVERALL AMV WILL RECEIVE A $50 BEST BUY GIFT CERTIFICATE (US Residents Only, International Winner(s) will receive an equal value prize of the same amount).

Rules & Guidelines

In order to provide the best AMVʼs to the attendees at San Japan, we require that you please read and comply with the rules & guidelines given.

1. All AMV entries submitted must be made by you, and you alone.

2. Any AMV video submitted to the contest must not have been made before 2008. Preferably the AMV should be made in 2009 or 2010.

3. Your AMV submission must not be the same AMV that was submitted in any other previous San Japan AMV contest.

4. All AMVʼs submitted MUST have, either before, or after, a given credit to the Musical Artist, Song, Anime, & AMV creator, edited within the AMV itself.

i. If you used an audio source from a Movie or TV Series, just give credit to the actual Movie or TV Series if you do not know who the original musical composer is.

ii. If you have a custom intro/outro to your AMV, please keep this short within 5 seconds or less, ANY intro/ourtro will count towards the AMVʼs given time limit.

iii. You may use an ʻMTVʼ text style of credits that are shown at the start of the AMV and the ending of the AMV.

An example of a clean ʻMTVʼ text style below.

Best format is:

AMV Creative Creator - (You)
(Artist) - (Album of artist) - (Song)
(Anime)

Example:

AMV Creative Creator - John Doe
Three Days Grace - One-X - Pain
Ah! My Goddess

If you have no credits what-so-ever in your submitted AMV, your AMV will be IMMEDIATELY disqualified.

5. All AMVʼs will be judged based upon: Specific Category, Creative Editing, Originality, & Fun Factor.

6. Mainstream American Animation is now allowed, but Television logoʼs and subtitles are absolutely NOT allowed, Please use DVD sources.

7. Japanese video game CGI sequences and/or Japanese machinima (ie Square Enix games) are also allowed, however they can not have any subtitles or logoʼs (See Rule #14).

8. U.S. video game CGI sequences and/or U.S. machinima such as Halo or Gears of War is NOT allowed.

9. Live action ʻmemeʼ or ʻcameoʼ clips are allowed in the Comedy/p00p category ONLY, as long they are a short clipʼs and are not continuously shown throughout the AMV.

10. Please avoid using grainy and/or low quality anime source footage, such as Youtube and/or any Flash based sourced movie. If you need good source of video we recommend you picking up a DVD of given source.

11. All videos must be in a universal format readable by any computer, Mac/PC *.

  • MPEG
  • DVD

*All Videos submitted MUST be in a NTSC format (29.97fps).  Recommended Frame size 720x480 (Standard) or 1920x1080 (Widescreen). Frame size must be no smaller than 640x480.

NO YOUTUBE, DAILYMOTION, OR ANY STREAMING VIDEO WEBSITES LINKS. PERIOD. DIRECT FILE DOWNLOAD ONLY.

SUBMITTING A VIDEO FROM A STREAMING WEBSITE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED.

12. No more than 3 videos per entrant, and no more than 1 video in a specific category.

13. Ballad songs (ie. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven) are not recommended unless they are edited to fit in its required time limit for its specific category. It is best is to keep the AMV within its category time limit.

14. ALL AMVʼs used MUST be without English and/or Japanese subtitle text or noticeable logos. If your video has subtitles, we will contact you about a possible disqualification if the issue is not address in the amount of time given to you. (TRANSLATION: NO HARD SUBS, NO LOGOS)

15. Please read #11 & #14 again.

16.Audio, such as music and/or audio-clips, is recommended to be clean quality and audible for everyone to hear clearly.

17.Anime footage and music must be viewable and audible for all ages; blood, gore, and slight profanity are ʻokayʼ. However sexual footage, and overuse of profanity (usage of "f" & "s" word) is NOT allowed. If you're unsure about a song then please use a "clean" version.

18. With the amount of time given in the schedule, we may or may not air your submitted AMV due to time constraints of the schedule. We will inform you if your AMV will be aired or not. All AMV that make it into the schedule will make it into a TV special of AnimeFunTV.
