Cosplay Chess Rules
January 20, 2010 by admin

COSPLAY CHESS
How it works: The human chess board is controlled by the normal-sized chess board with 2 players, one for the Black side and one for the White. The cosplaying piece moves where the player asks it to, calling out the directions and how many spaces to move (ie. “Kyoya, move 2 spaces diagonally left”). A laser pointer will assist you in making sure where to move. If a player wants a piece on their side to take out an opponent piece, they will say so on their directions (ie. “Kyoya, move 2 spaces diagonally left and take out Naruto!”). When taking out another cosplaying piece, there will be an epic battle between the two pieces wherein the TAKER wins and the TAKEN loses. The game ends when the King of one side falls.
Rules:
1. All the cosplaying pieces will be announced before the game commences. Be ready for your moment of fame with an epic pose or a crazy battle cry or what have you.
2. When you are going to be taken (You’ll know in the instructions “Kyoya, move 2 spaces diagonally left and take our Naruto”), assume whatever tactic you have whether defending yourself, fleeing, dying dramatically, what have you. If you have been taken/vanquished, please proceed outside the chess board and root for your teammates. We’re announcing the winners of the prizes after the game.
3. Please keep the fights under 1 minute. 30 seconds should be enough, unless you want to incorporate special moves or say certain lines.
4. PLEASE PLEASE listen to your corresponding chess players, as they should not need to repeat their instructions.
5. For the fights, you have free reign to do whatever you like, except hard hitting and actual violence. You can talk to all your fellow pieces, interact with them as long as WHEN A PLAYER CALLS YOUR NAME, YOU LISTEN. You can run around the board or chase someone around it when it’s your time to move as long as you remember where you are on the board and return there. Seriously, you can do whatever you want.
Reminders before the start of the event:
1. Come knowing your piece’s moves. One of the complaints about Cosplay Chess participants in the past is that they didn’t even know how their piece was supposed to move.
2. COME EARLY if you can. If you are not there by the time, chances are your spot will be given away. Sign in to claim your position for sure.
For the White and Black Chess Players:
1. Call out your piece name using their Cosplay or Character. This will be on a label on the chess piece for your convenience. First call out their name, then the direction (forward, backward, left, right, diagonally left, etc.) and number of spaces they are moving.
2. If they are taking out another piece, make this clear. “Ichigo, move two spaces forward and obliterate Sasuke.”
3. You can obviously improvise and say what you want. Please try not to use obscene language. Keep your dialogue under 1 [...]

2010 Cosplay Show Rules
Forms Now Available! Click to print them out!
Hall Cosplay Show Form [Click this if you're signing up for the Hall Cosplay just for walking around the convention and want to possibly win an award, OPTIONAL].
Cosplay Fashion Show Form [Click this if you're signing up for the halftime cosplay fashion show happening during the Cosplay Show, NON-COMPETITIVE].
Cosplay Contest Form [Click this if you're signing up for the main San Japan Cosplay Show happening on Saturday evening, COMPETITIVE].
If you have questions, please read the rules below thoroughly and please post on our San Japan :3 Cosplay forums.
For questions about cosplay in general, please read the convention FAQ.
Class System
San Japan is going to implement a Two Class competition system for Craftsmanship, Performance, and Walk-On judging. This is to ensure fairness in competition that is otherwise not seen at most cosplay-related events seen in the State of Texas. It is HIGHLY important that all potential entries read and understand the layout of this system. This system is a bit of an experiment, so if you have any questions at all, we strongly encourage you to ask away.
Novice: This is the class for first time costumers or people who have been costuming for less than a year with no major awards (Judge’s Awards are not counted). They will have their own award category for all three major judgments. If you have been costuming for over a year and are not perfectly confident in your skill, please discuss this with us so we might negotiate your placement in this category.
Open: This is the class for all cosplayers whom have been cosplaying for some time or have won major awards. They will have their own award category in all three major judgments. There may be some who do not fulfill the normal requirements of Open placed in this category if the directors and judges feel you should be competing at this level given situations where a first time costumer is able to produce a higher level craft (it has happened, we promise).
Basic Rules for the Stage
As a note, all Skit entries will be pre-screened before being allowed on stage. Signing up for the show does not guarantee you a place in the show. Pre-screening means we will be going through skits for content that doesn’t apply to our rules or for things that might go over time. We require a SCRIPT FROM ALL SKIT ENTRIES, recorded or not, to be turned in AT THE TIME OF ENTRY. If your skit has audio, please turn the CD in with your entry form and script.
1. Content: We expect all stage entries, both walk-ons and skits, to ensure their entry maintains a TV-PG rating (not how PG is defined for film, but for television). To quote Wikipedia:
TV-PG (Unsuitable for young children)
This rating signifies that the program may be unsuitable for younger children without the guidance of a parent. Many parents may want to watch it with their younger children. Various game shows and most reality shows are [...]
