San Japan 12.5 Throwback Convention

It is time to dust off those Chobits ears, dig out your Yu Yu Hakusho cosplay, and rewind your Robotech VHS. This year, San Japan is having a throwback convention September 3 – 5.

Join us at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for a convention celebrating the 12+ years of San Japan. You’ll see new artwork, photos from past years, and celebrate over a decade of anime fandom in the Alamo City.

Tickets go on sale before the end of April. Room blocks will open with tickets. To ensure a safe convention, attendee passes have been capped at 10,000. Be sure to buy early, the show is expected to sell out.

You probably have a bunch of questions. We’re written a FAQ below about the upcoming convention.
Stay tuned for more announcements.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is San Japan 12.5 (2021) all about?
        • San Japan 12.5 is our 2021 convention with special modifications to ensure maximum safety and fun. We’re calling it a throwback year because we’ll be showcasing art and photography from throughout the history of San Japan. We will have all the elements that our fans love about San Japan including concerts, electronic dance, artists, vendors, panels, maid cafe, and other exhibitors. We’re calling it 12.5 since we’re capping attendance and making significant modifications to our space.

  • What about San Japan 13?
      • San Japan 13 – Horror Theme will be back in 2022 when we move to our new home on the east side of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

  • What safety modifications have been made?
    • The big modification is our attendance cap, allowing plenty of space for a variety of new social distancing protocols. We’ll have a 100% mandatory mask policy.  Daily temperature checks will be required for all attendees and staff. New sanitation protocols will be used by venue staff including additional sanitation of high touch surfaces, UV-aided sanitation, higher-frequency cleaning, and additional sanitizing stations deployed throughout the event space. You’ll also find additional space between booths. Social distancing is part of our line control protocols. We’ll also be using new space for queuing and programming activities.

  • Why only 3-day passes?
    • This is part of our safety protocol. We are trying to create a safe bubble at San Japan. This is partnered with the attendance cap of 10,000 attendees. We want San Japan to be the most safe for the most attendees.
    • What about Gold Passes?
      • We will announce Gold Passes and some specialty passes soon. Stayed tuned!

  • What about panels, guests, concerts, autographs, vendors, etc?
      • We know you have lots of questions about specific elements of the convention. We’ll be announcing guests and content elements throughout the summer.

  • Why 10,000 attendees?
      • We’ve worked with our community partners and reviewed the latest event safety protocols to determine a number that we feel lets us create the community atmosphere while still adhering to the best health plans.
    • When will tickets be available?
      • We are currently transitioning to a new ticketing platform. We expect the transition to be complete by the end of April.

  • When will hotels be available?
      • The hotel room blocks for the San Antonio Downtown Marriott and San Antonio Grand Hyatt will open when tickets open.

  • What about rollovers?
      • Ticket rollovers will be uploaded into our new ticketing system by the end of May. We ask for your patience as we make the switch to our new platform.

  • When can I submit panels, celebrity suggestions, or art submissions?
    • Keep an eye on our social media channels. We’ll be announcing soon.

  • What about the art contest?
    • We appreciate everyone who submitted for the Horror Themed Art Contest. We will not be rolling over those entries and encourage you to submit them again when we open the art contest for 2022.

  • I’m an artist, vendor, exhibitors, or other non-attendee with specific questions.
    • We are in the process of reaching out to all non-attendee badge types. We ask your patience as we continue this outreach. If you require immediate contact, please reach out to your usual San Japan departmental contact.
