The San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) was the first community-based organization created in response to the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in San Antonio. In 1986, an owner of a local gay bar, Robert Edwards aka Papa Bear, saw his patrons and friends dying from AIDS. Knowing many had no family or other support, he created SAAF House, a volunteer-run hospice. SAAF provided residential nursing/hospice services for almost 30 years to well over 1,500 individuals with HIV/AIDS. In 2009, SAAF added a 6-bedroom house, known as Carson House, to provide transitional housing for chronically unsheltered individuals living with HIV.
